Welcome to the Here in the Catskills blog! This site will cover many aspects of life here in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. The Catskills are a wonderful place to call home, and this area is much more than just a tourist retreat with pretty mountains. It’s a way of life, and I hope to share that on this blog.
There are plenty of sites that focus on what visitors can do in the Catskills, but there’s not much of an offering for locals. And there are so many exciting things to see and do in our own backyards! I’ll be discussing many subjects, including Catskills history, seasonal topics, and interesting news. Plus, there will be country lifestyle and hobby pieces, like baking, gardening, birding, and more. I’ll also investigate tourist attractions in the area and let you know if they’re worth a local’s time and money. Basically, if it’s related to life here, it’s on here!
As for me, I grew up in the Catskills on a farm that’s been in my family for five generations. The house we live in was built for my great-great-great aunt in the 1880s. Life here, for my family and I, holds a great deal of togetherness and tradition.
My grandmother had a recipe column in the local (now defunct) newspaper for many years about our life here on the farm. In many ways, this will have a similar focus: local history, area attractions, country recipes, and Catskills life.
That’s all for now! This blog is still developing, so please leave comments on what you’re interested in and would like to see more of. This is just the framework – there’s a whole world of topics to cover here in the Catskills!
